Hello, Elemental Family, You may have noticed that a few of our medicine providers have been temporarily removed from our menu over the past few months. Elemental Wellness offers the Bay Area’s most extensive lab-testing on ALL meds; if you haven’t seen your favorite product on our shelf lately, it’s possible we’re working with the provider on ways to meet our rigid standards for cleanliness.

What do we do?

We send all of our samples to SC Labs for microbiological tests, residual solvent tests, and pesticide tests. If any sample fails any screening for any reason, that product will not be accepted by Elemental.

Why are we doing this?

Aside from our unwavering belief that the health and safety of MMJ patients should always be top priority, extensive lab-testing will soon become a normality throughout our industry. Currently, California does not have state regulations in place to protect patients from dirty, potentially harmful contaminants. "Right now, the reward of testing hasn't outweighed the cost in the eyes of many collectives," said Rachel S., Purchasing Manager at Elemental. "Growers aren't required to test, clubs aren't required to test, and it costs a lot--so why do it?" Next year, according to MAUCRSA (Medicinal and Adult-Use Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act), lab-testing will be required to be completed through a licensed laboratory, by either the licensed grower or licensed distributor before it’s provided to a dispensary. Acceptable labs and limits will be decided upon at a later date. Until that date arrives, we’ve set our own standards based on recommendations from respected labs, and requirements already in place in other states. If this feels a bit like deja vu, that’s because this isn’t the first time Elemental has set the standard on medicine cleanliness: Back in 2015, we placed a limit on residual solvents in extracts, prior to the passing of the San Jose regulations that required dispensaries to do so.

So, what exactly do these tests show?

Microbiological testing ensures your meds are not “contaminated with a variety of harmful pathogens,” which can lead to serious illness in some patients. It detects trace amounts of yeast, molds, E. coli, enterobacteriaceae, and more.

Residual solvent testing confirms that concentrated cannabis is free of all harmful solvents, impurities, and other added odorants and chemicals. With consumption of extracts on the rise, the importance of solvent testing will only continue to grow.

Our pesticide screening can “identify and quantify trace pesticide, fungicide, and PGR residues,” to help eliminate meds that contain any residual pesticide. Ingesting pesticides is potentially harmful, even at the smallest doses.

Other Lab-Testing

Additionally, Elemental also provides full cannabinoid profiling and terpene analysis to assist patients in deciding what meds best suit their individual needs. Cannabinoid profiling “allows doctors to determine accurate dosage, ensures that providers can verify the quality of their products, and helps patients to select the right treatment for their symptoms.” Terpenes, which create different cannabis strains’ unique fragrances, work with cannabinoids to create a synergistic, therapeutic effect for patients. Full terpene and cannabinoid reports on select meds will be available at Elemental soon! We’ve already begun training our consulting team on our revolutionary testing procedures--don’t hesitate to ask them about our protocol on your next visit!

Be well!
